What I've Created
Why I Create
Growing up in North Philadelphia, life was often challenging and unpredictable. One summer day at my great-grandma's house, a place that usually symbolized safety and love, I experienced a moment that changed me forever. My cousins and I were playing at a nearby park, enjoying the freedom of childhood, when a sudden gunshot shattered the serenity. Confusion and fear filled the air as we huddled behind a slide, hoping to stay out of sight. The tragic loss of a close family friend, who was trying to better himself in impossible circumstances, became a haunting memory that stayed with me.
This profound experience opened my eyes to the harsh realities faced by my community, where being identified as African American often meant enduring a life filled with systemic challenges and societal prejudices. It fueled my desire to give voice to these struggles and inspired me to write. Writing became my way of coping, of making sense of the chaos and pain around me. It allowed me to transform my emotions into stories that not only expressed my innermost feelings but also shed light on the often-overlooked darkness that many like me endure.
Creating my first script, Darkness, was a transformative experience. The characters Nia and Raven embodied different facets of my personality and struggles, and the setting of North Philadelphia reflected the environment that shaped me. Writing this script gave me a sense of purpose and freedom, an outlet to articulate the injustices and complexities of life in my community. It was a way to turn my personal pain into a narrative that could resonate with others and, perhaps, inspire change.
In conclusion, my journey has been marked by resilience and a deep-seated passion for storytelling. As I further my education at Loyola Marymount University, as a Screenwriting and English major, and continue my mission to create stories that make people feel seen, heard, and connected. I am committed to using my talents to shine a light on the realities of my community and to contribute positively to the world through my writing.
